Green Spotlight: Sustainable and Non-Toxic Perfume Brands

Green Spotlight: Sustainable and Non-Toxic Perfume Brands

With great glamour comes great responsibility. Although the perfume industry is high on glam, it can have a negative environmental impact due to ingredient sourcing and packaging related concerns and confusing labelling. Ecocult included two of Eden Square’s brands in their roundup of sustainable and non toxic perfume brands, which successfully answer the following questions:

1. What are your ingredients and are they safe?
You want the ingredients and their sourcing to be transparent. And beware of natural, as natural materials can be overharvested to extinction, or cause skin irritation. They can be “natural identical,” that is extracted naturally or replicated in the laboratory in an environmentally friendly way.

2. Where is your product manufactured?
Choosing to source and supply locally not only supports local economies but reduces fuel consumption and emissions.

3. Is your product tested on animals?
According to the FDA, “cruelty-free” or “not tested on animals,” are phrases that are unrestricted, without legal definitions (for example, the finished product may not be tested, but the raw materials may be), so always look for third-party certifications.

4. Is your packaging eco-friendly?
Biodegradable, reusable or recyclable packaging are the best way to support the environment. Say yes to glass bottles in cardboard packaging, and no to plastic cellophane and pumps.

5. What’s your alcohol base?
Ethanol, fermented from corn, is a common base but sustainable brands frequently use sugar cane alcohol as an environmentally friendly alternative.
